Animal's Name and Type
Peri (short for Periwinkle Blue) Siamese Cat, male 16 years
What is the animal's story?
My mom was in a Pet store buying bird toys when a lady walked in carrying a Siamese cat, and he was talking up a storm. She told the owner she wanted to trade the cat in for an aquarium and if the owner wouldn't let her do that she was taking the cat to the pound. He was constantly crying and climbing on her and she couldn't take it any more!
Mom immediately offered to take the cat, and gave him to me. We always had Siamese cats, and I had been looking for one. He is a sweet, loving, and cuddly cat who is happiest when he is cuddled up in my lap. He talks, like most Siamese do, but it's a sweet, happy sound. He does have a bad habit of jumping up onto my shoulder to try to ride around - he's nearly 15 pounds, so that's a bit scary when I don't realize he's around! I'm trying to break him of that before one of us gets hurt accidently.
Advice
- research the animal before you buy -- some breeds are known for specific traits. For example, Siamese cats "talk", they're not quiet unless they want to be. So a person wanting a quiet kitty shouldn't look for a "Meezer".
- get their health checked out -- rescued animals are frequently not in the best of health and should be tested for disease and watched for traumatized behaviors
- if you have room for an animal to love, check the shelter first -- your next best friend just might be waiting on you there!
What is this animal's life like now?
He's the pampered prince of the house, sleeps where he wants to, eats when he wants, although we had to break him from standing on the bottom ledge into the fridge - the past owner apparently fed him directly from the fridge. He's happy and so are we!
