For 27 years, FARM was known as the Farm Animal Reform Movement. In 2008, the group changed its name to “Farm Animal Rights Movement.” According to founder Alex Herschaft, the new name better reflects their philosophy that “the industry is beyond reform.” The organization now focuses on vegan campaigns exclusively.

Founded:

Founded by Alex Herschaft in 1976 as the Vegetarian Information Service. The organization became Farm Animal Reform Movement in 1981, then became Farm Animal Rights Movement in 2008.

Main Issue(s):

Veganism and farmed animals.

Campaigns:

Every year, FARM organizes Meatout, World Farm Animals Day, and Gentle Thanksgiving. FARM also organizes the Animal Rights National Conference, which alternates annually between the east coast and the west coast, and gives out grants from the Sabina Fund to small, grassroots organizations that promote veganism. The group also co-founded the Equal Justice Alliance, a coalition of organizations fighting the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act and its allegedly unconstitutional restrictions on free speech and assembly.

Notable Slogans:

“I don’t eat my friends.”
“Stop global warming . . . one bite at a time.”
