Last-Minute Cruelty-Free Father's Day Gifts

Saturday June 14, 2008
For ethical vegans, giving gifts can be difficult because you want to give something the other person will appreciate and use, without compromising your principles. Many vegans are also concerned about the environment, so that plastic desktop bowling game is also out. While others celebrate Father's Day with silk ties, silly gadgets, and steak dinners, what can you give that's animal-friendly and eco-friendly? If your dad appreciates hemp belts, cotton ties, or recycled rubber wallets, you've got it easy! If not, here are some gift ideas that can be arranged at the last minute, that you both might agree on:
  • Tickets to a concert, sporting event, or show
  • iTunes gift certificate
  • Subscription to an online magazine, journal, or newspaper
  • Membership to the local art museum
  • A download of a computer game, software, or an ebook
  • An afternoon at the local driving range, batting cages, or bowling alley*
  • A donation to his favorite charity
Not sure if that health-related charity is cruelty-free? Check out this list of health charities that don't fund vivisection.

*Does the thought of wearing rented leather shoes bother you? Dexter Shoe Company makes affordable non-leather bowling shoes. Contact Dexter's customer service department to find out which current styles are leather-free.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there!
