The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign wants President Obama to appoint Raul Grijalva as Secretary of the Interior, because of his strong environmental record, and specifically his strong record protecting wild horses. According to AWHPC, Grijalva "will protect our natural treasures, including American wild horses and burros."
The current Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, has announced that he will step down by the end of March. Salazar is a rancher and a hunter, a former member of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, and "champion" for ranchers. In addition to killing livestock, ranchers kill wild horses and other wild animals because the cattle take habitat away from wildlife when they graze on public lands. The Bureau of Land Management has been rounding up wild horses for years, but under Salazar/Obama, round-ups of wild horses accelerated. In fact, letting livestock graze on public lands leads to a whole host of animal protection and environmental problems.
On the other hand, Grijalva, an Arizona Congressman, is the author of "A Report on the Bush Administration Assaults on our National Parks, Forests and Public Lands (A Partial List)". Grijalva has also been the Chairman of the National Parks, Forests and Public Lands Subcommittee within the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee. In his report, Grijalva accused the Bush administration of pandering to the gun lobby in allowing loaded firearms in National Parks, "undermining the National Environmental Policy Act," and "mismanagement of wild horses and burros." He notes that critics of the wild horse program find the round-ups "aggressive and unnecessary" and that the administration had been "removing rangeland for the horses in response to pressure from the cattle industry." He gets it.
What you can do: The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, which is a coalition of over 50 organizations, wants the public to urge President Obama to appoint Grijalva as Secretary of the Interior. You can submit your comment through the official White House online form, or if you're short on time, use the AWHPC webform.
Update: Former congressman Dennis Kucinich has thrown his support behind Grijalva for Secretary of the Interior, and has a petition here, to ask Obama to appoint Grijalva. Kucinich is vegan, and while in Congress, had served as the Chair and the Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and was a member of the Animal Protection Caucus.
