Dennis Kucinich (D, OH) is my favorite member of Congress. Not only is he a vegan animal rights supporter, but his wife Elizabeth is the Director of Public Affairs for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

Kucinich was the only member of Congress to vote against the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, and explained why:

My concern about this bill is that it does nothing to address the real issue of animal protection but, instead targets those advocating animal rights. This legislation will have a real and chilling effect on people's Constitutionally protected First Amendment rights . . . I understand the intent here, but I think that you must be very careful about painting everyone with the broad brush of terrorism who might have a legitimate objection to research with or treatment of animals that is inhumane.

In December of 2009, Kucinich was asked what he would do if he were dictator of the United States for one day, and he replied, in part, "I think I would order everyone to have vegan chocolate chip brownies." Kucinich then explained the benefits of veganism for human health, the environment and animals.

Kucinich spoke at the Animal Rights National Conference this year, and the full transcript of his speech is available here. You can also learn more about Kucinich and his vegan ways here.
