TAFA 2009 - Banquet

Ginnifer Goodwin
Actor Ginnifer Goodwin started off the Saturday evening banquet at Taking Action for Animals, and talked about her vegan moment: while pouring milk over her cereal, she realized what it was. Then she thought about her eggs and burgers, and read more about the issue. She said she cried, took off her leather shoes, and became vegan.

Jim Moran
Congressman Jim Moran (D, VA) is the co-chair of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, and told the crowd, "Animal cruelty degrades our own humanity . . . Itís much more than protecting helpless creatures. Itís about who we are as a society.Ē Moran concluded by thanking the audience for "speaking for Godís creatures who canít speak for themselves."

John Conyers
Congressman John Conyers (D, MI) authored legislation to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption, and is the 2009 Humane Representative of the Year. Conyers proposed that TAFA attendees head over to the White House during Lobby Day on Monday, to meet with President Obama.

Wane Pacelle
HSUS President and CEO Wayne Pacelle talked about his decision to work with Michael Vick, the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback who was recently released from prison after serving 23 months for dogfighting. Pacelle said that if we turn our backs on Vick, we'll be turning our backs on everone who says they want to change.

Nellie McKay
Singer/songwriter Nellie McKay closed the evening with a great concert featuring original songs and covers, and gave away free copies of her CD, "Obligatory Villagers." McKay stated that she was recently adopted by two pit bulls, and pointed out her chewed-up vegan shoe to the audience. Her next album will be mostly Doris Day songs, and McKay read off a list of possible titles for the new album, including "Thriller."
