President-elect Obama needs to hear from you! Obama's transition team wants to know "what you'd like the Obama-Biden administration to do and where you'd like the country to go." Tell the transition team that you want animal-friendly appointees for Secretary of Agriculture and Secretary of the Interior.

Regarding the Secretary of Agriculture position, Bruce Friedrich, vice-president of policy and government affairs for PETA writes:

Three names that are being discussed in the media--Charlie Stenholm, Colin Peterson, and John Salazar--would be horrible choices, as these men have supported the status quo consistently and would be very unlikely to support even the most modest of reforms. Even on noncontroversial animal welfare measures, they have gone against the will of the American people to support the worst policies imaginable--including horse slaughter and the sport-hunting of polar bears--even when the vast majority of Congress, including Sen. Obama, were going the other way.

Regular readers of this blog will remember that Obama is already inclined to appoint a hunter to be Secretary of the Interior, endangering the lives of wild animals in National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges. Hunters have been working for years to get the Department of the Interior to open up more of these lands for more hunting. One name that has come up for this position is that of Mike Thompson (D-CA), who is a hunter.

So who should be appointed to these positions? The Humane Society Legislative Fund recommends John Boyd, Jr., founder and president of the National Black Farmers Association, and former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack for the Secretary of Agriculture position. For Secretary of the Interior, HSLF recommends Representatives Raul Grijalva and Jay Inslee, and former Interior Department Deputy Secretary David Hayes.

Click here to fill out a webform and let Obama's transition team know that you want him to appoint an animal-friendly cabinet. Not sure what to say? Sign the HSLF electronic petition to send your message. The petition and webform can be used until we hear that Obama has made his appointments for these positions.

Send your own message or sign the petition.
