PETA's Graphic Undercover Video of Animal Cruelty at a Factory Farm
PETA has just released an extremely graphic undercover video that documents horrific cruelty against pigs at a factory farm in Iowa. In the video, the workers beat the pigs with metal rods, slam the "runt" piglets head-first onto a concrete floor, and castrate the piglets without anesthesia. The screams of those pigs will haunt me forever. The video also shows the extreme confinement of breeding sows in row after row of gestation crates. I strongly recommend watching the video if you have any doubt that animals raised for food are treated cruelly before being slaughtered.
In a CNN article, PETA stated that they will turn the video over to law enforcment, and the individuals involved will hopefully be prosecuted. The factory farm in the video is a Hormel supplier, and a Hormel spokesperson called the abuses in the video "completely unacceptable." But gestation crates are OK?
Although this video is unusually explicit in its depiction of animal cruelty, there is no such thing as humane meat. No matter how well the animals are treated while alive, slaughter is inherently inhumane. The solution? Go vegan.

As a native Iowan, the news of the abuses at the hog farm has shaken many farmers around the area. I guess they never expected something like that to happen here (despite the fact that the Agriprocessors “kosher” plant in Iowa has been slammed for it’s unethical slaughter practices and worker abuse).
But the kicker is, beatings and torment to these animals happens *all the time*! They are not isolated cases. I’ve heard so many comments from people in grocery stores and at college who state “what happened to those animals is terrible, but they are still meant to be eaten…”
They don’t realize gestation crates without soft bedding on concrete are these animals’ permanent homes until they die from trauma, disease, or slaughter. They can’t even turn around! Piglets are castrated, ear-notched, tail docked, and have their teeth removed without any painkillers. They live their lives in darkness to never feel the sun on their backs; to never rest in the mud. The tragedy is that these are the industry’s standards. All this is to happen to the pigs, just for our insatiable craving for flesh that we don’t even need to survive.
It’s time we evolve as a species. Our humanity is slipping away with each creature we brutalize, and life we take away. There is no mercy given to these animals, you can see it in their eyes how terrified they are. As blood and shit continues to seep into our rivers and soil, we are killing this planet and plunging it closer and closer into turmoil, all the while ripping at flesh and increasing our chances of irrepairable damage to our bodies and our home.
For the sake of all, when are people going to wake up and realize that the food industry they are giving their money to is lying to them, torturing animals, and polluting our earth, all for the almighty dollar. Make the choice that saves lives…go vegan!

Then, these animals are pushed into the dump.
Vegans have this animal blood on their hands each time they eat their organic vegtables.
